Five Little Black Crows

Five Little Black Crows
Written by: Kids World Exploration

Five little black crows
By the old barn door,
One flew home
And then there were four.

Four little black crows
By the old oak tree
One flew home
And then there were three.

Three little black crows
With nothing to do
One flew home
And then there were two.

Two little black crows
Out in the sun
One flew home
And then there was one.

One little black crow all alone
Through the day
He ate in the fields.

Scare All The Crows Away

Over the last week or so crows have been taking over our play area. Pecans are falling from the trees and the annual crows are back for the feast. The children have been observing them as they come in and also through the windows. Some days I feel like I am living in the old movie “Birds” so if you can’t beet them you might as well join them and start a lesson on crows and also scarecrow.
The children brought in old cloths from home and they stuffed them with news paper. We are going to vote on what to use for the face pillow case, broom, tin can or a rack. We will graph the results.

Paper Bag Pumpkins

Set out a supply of different size paper bags and news paper. Allow the children to crumple paper and stuff into paper bags of any size. Once they are done filling their bag let them tape it shut with masking tape. Set out trays of orange and yellow paints and let them paint their pumpkin bags. Watch your classroom turn into a pumpkin patch full of life long learning.

Write and Wipe Pumpkins

What better way to get children writing and drawing then to let them write and wipe on pumpkins. Set out trays with pumpkins, dry eraser markers and rags. Watch as the children begin to write and draw over and over again with this simple seasonal pumpkin drawing experience.

Pumpkin Water Table

Turn all those scooped out pumpkins into individual water tables. Place the scooped out pumpkins into dish pans and fill the pumpkins up with water. Add measuring cups, droppers, pumpkin seeds, and measuring spoons. The children can measure and scoop out the floating seeds. Don’t be surprised if they stand at the new water table for quiet some time.

Nature Walk

Today we went on a nature walk around the school campus. Each child carried along with them a small paper lunch sack and as we walked and explored the changing trees the children picked up items of interest for further exploration. Once back in the class the children dumped their bags to compare with one another their findings. They discovered that there where several different types of leaves. They wanted to know which type of leaf had the most. So a fall leaf graph was in order. Here is what they came up with.

Fall Finger Play Songs

Five Little Leaves

Five little leaves so bright and gay (hold up 5 fingers)
Were dancing about on a tree one day (flutter fingers)
The wind came blowing through town (make a wind sound)
One little leaf came tumbling to the ground (remove one leaf)
Keep repeating until there are no leaves left.

Knit glove with self sticking Velcro and silk leaves.

Using finger play songs with young children help teachers to teach pre-reading skills in a fun playful way. Finger play songs will help children develop memory, hear syllables, gain phonological awareness, play with rhymes and understand sequencing. Using finger play songs with props will help support your English Language Learners by associating the object with the words in the song to build on their vocabulary. Props will all also help maintain children’s attention which will lend to a better learning environment.

Five Little Scarecrows
Five little scarecrows standing in a field
The first one said “Oh my it’s getting late.”
The second one said “There are black crows flying in the air.”
The third one said “But we don’t care!”
The forth one said “They are ready to land.”
The fifth one said “Boo! all the crows flew away.”

Tan knit glove, craft straw hats, wiggle eyes, and scrap fabric and small craft buttons. I glued with hot glue.

Fall Is Here!

Fall is here which leads to wonderful learning experiences. Bring in all those real fall items to make your learning environment more meaningful to the children. Bring in the leaves and nuts for sorting and making patterns, pumpkins for weighting and measuring. Watch the language bloom in your room when providing real items for children to explore and experiment with.
