Listening and Speaking Standard Free E-Course

Do you bite your lip and start to sweat...

When you hear your administrator bring up the Common Core State Standards?

It goes something like this, "how are you meeting the needs of your children and implementing the Common Core State Standards at the same time?"

This is followed by a big "GULP!" from you.

So if you don't want to break into a sweat,

watch my first and free video E-Course on how I am ensuring that my children will walk away at the end of the year with speaking and listening skills they need to succeed.

Before watching the video make sure to download and print the note sheets and handouts.

Dramatic Play Mexican Restaurant

Why we need to create different types of dramatic play for our little ones

Dramatic play gives our little ones a safe place to act out the things that they see the adults in their lives doing every day. It gives them an opportunity to experiment and see how things work.

Dramatic play helps children develop

Problem Solving Skills
Knowledge on how the real world works
Language Skills
Cooperation and Sharing with Others
Imagination
Creative Thinking

Our Mexican Restaurant
Our restaurant sits just outside of our home living center.

To go orders

Looking at menu and finding money to pay.
If you look in the back of the picture you will see the stove area and worktable to prepare the orders.
Food is served.
The day before the restaurant was up and running we asked the children thing that we would need for the restaurant.  The first thing they said was money.  So off they went to the writing area to make their own money.

Here is some of the money they made.

You can find the printable for this dramatic play on Pre-K Pages

Make Your Own Play Food

We like to change up our dramatic play often, but sometimes it is hard to find the right material for the job.

The solution to the problem

Make your own play food by using Crayola mold magic. The ideas then become endless and your little ones will be given an opportunity to explore and learn all different types of occupations.

Here is what we did.

We are in the process of creating a Mexican Restaurant, but could not find a variety of food.

What we used

White model magic this way we could paint each piece to look like the real food.

After each piece air dried we then used water colors to paint.

If the play food had small parts like the salsa in top we then covered it with Elmer's white school glue.

 Create play and have fun!

The Grouchy Ladybug

A fun way to get the little ones writing like a pro.

Start off the activity by reading the book The Grouchy Ladybug.  After the story have a shared writing experience.

If you were a ladybug what would you fly bye?

If you were a ladybug what would you say?

After the group reading and group discussion have your children draw and write about the grouchy ladybug at small group.

Zoo Zoo Where Going to the Zoo

All children love the zoo and all the animals in it.

The zoo units is our classroom favorite every year hands down.  We stared our unit with the book I Went to the Zoo.

The great thing about this book is that it is designed for beginning reading.  It has strong picture support with repetitive text so that the children can help read along with you.

Other books included

Pocket Chart Story Telling

Children always enjoy reading with a pocket chart using their names.

Children are able to move the names and animals around to created a new story for themselves as well as for their friends.

Small Group Activities

Children always love learning with hands on activities and what better way to get them counting then with small animals and game dice.

Say It, Count It, Write It

Children roll game dice and identify the number and then count out that amount of animals for their zoo mat.  Once they have counted out the animals they write the amount on the mat.

Need to differentiate the instruction

Children can also use the dice to add and subtract animals on their mat.

Measuring zoo animals

Children used 1" tiles for measuring the animals.  After they figured out how tall or long the animal was they wrote their finds on the data sheet.

Small Group Reading

We made copies of the book I Went to the Zoo in booklet form so that the children could color and read as a small group activity.  Books then went home so that they could read it to their family.

Roll It, Say It, Write It

Children rolled letter dice in uppercase and lowercase letters after rolling dice they then identified the letter and wrote it on the mat.

Need to differentiate the instruction

Have children tell you the letter sound as they roll and write.
