Making Crawfish in Preschool

We made crawfish out of egg cartons

Children painted the egg carton with glue paint and them embellished them with glitter and any other items they wanted to use for their crawfish

We Used Sticks for Art

Today we made art with all of our found sticks.

Children painted sheets of foam with shades of blue and green and then they stuck sticks into the foam.

Next the children added colored floral rocks, cut out fish, yarn, pipe cleaners, wooden beads, and netting. 

We now have these beautiful art pieces setting around our classroom.

There is nothing quit like art made by children.

Rainbow Fish

We made our rainbow fish out of paper lunch bags. The children stuffed their bags with news paper and rubber banded the end. Next they chose what color they wanted to paint the body of the fish. Once the paint dried the children placed the scales, eyes, and fins made out of cofee filters and other emblishments that they wanted to add.

Fishy In A Pond

Each child picked a shoe box or lid to paint as their fish pond.

They created their own fish from apple carton dividers, paper tubes, or egg carton. They embellished them with eyes, tissue paper, glitter, foil, and construction paper shapes.

Once the boxes were dry children glued stones, shells, sticks, silk leaves, and their fishes into their ponds.

 We used this as an assessment and placed the fishing project into their portfolios.

Five Little Fishes

The first fish said, "This pool is cool!" (Shiver and hug yourself)

The second fish said, "This pool is deep." (Use a low voice)

The third fish said, "I want to sleep." (yawn and stretch)

The fourth fish said, "I spy a ship." (hand shading eyes)

Fishing boat comes, line goes kersplash! (throw in line)

Away the five little fishies dash. (fingers "swim" away quickly)

Fishbowl Math

On Monday we will be starting a unit on Fun in the Sun. Around here that means things that we do around the rivers and lakes and all the animals that go with it. I thought I would start out with fish since most of the children have been fishing for the summer.


Here is a math game I came up with for this week.

I made copies of a fishbowl on white card stock and then cut blue paper in the shape of the water and glued it on. Once I had all the math mats ready I laminated them. I found small plastic fish for counting at the dollar store and also floral stones.

Object of the game is number recognition and counting.

• Each child at small group will get a fishbowl mat.
• Teacher will write numbers on the mat with a dry eraser marker.
• A number at the top for fish and a number at the bottom for stones.
• Child will identify each number and then count out the object for each of the numbers.
• Have them check their answers with one another.
• To make it more challenging the children can use addition to find the total of objects in the fishbowl.

You could also use game dice for the children to roll and identify the amount on the dice and then count out how many fish they need to put in the bowl. Once the fishbowl is full of fish the game is over.
