In the Air

We are getting ready to start our unit on transportation and community helpers.  I was going through some pictures and came across my pictures from last year that I wanted to share with you since I was in the planning mood. 

During our creative art workstation for in the air the children came up with these amazing air transportation creations.

 In the writing center children found cloud cut outs with transportation words that they could write on their own and this is what they did.  I turned the writing clouds into the boarder for our transportation bulletin board.  (Will be posted at a later date)

Say It, Count It, Write airplane passengers

 Let each child pick out which airplane mat they would like to use. Have the children roll a number dice. Have them identify the number on the dice. (say it) Once they have identified the number have them count out the passengers. (count it) After the children have counted out the right amount of passengers have them write the number on the math mat with a dry eraser marker. (write it)

I Can Ride... in a... Early Reader

School is out and I have been working on new items to help things run a little smoother.  Here is an early reader that I have created for a lesson on transportation.  You will find children riding in and on different types of transportation vehicles.   

This 14 page early reader is a great companion to your transportation unit theme or community helper unit theme of study.  This book could also be enlarged and made into a big book for group reading.  Simple enlarge to a 150% and bind at the top.  You can down load it at Teachers Pay Teachers 

T is for Trains

Children created trains with different kinds of found materials. (paper tubes, Styrofoam packaging,  plastic caps, they also used other collage materials)   The children created the train tracks by using black rectangle construction paper and different types of collage materials (craft sticks, q tips, pipe cleaners, packing peanuts) they also embellished their project with white chalk.

Train prints.  Use different items so that the children can create their own train by making prints with different objects.  (sponges, old spools, corks, forks)

Letter and Letter Sound Train Game

This week we played a new game called letter sound train game.

A group of 4 children sat down at the carpet area and each child started out with the engine of the train.  In the middle of the group were box cars with the letters written on each one, I made 4 letter cards for each letter.  The letters that I chose were ones that we have been working on and are introducing them to this month. (Bb, Cc, Rr, Ee, Ss, Tt).  I created a letter dice with these letters on each side.  I used a 6” X 6” mailing box.  We also placed small items that would start with each letter sound.  For example (Bb, boy, bee, ball, bat).

Each child took a turn rolling the dice. The group identified the letter and then found the letter card that matched the letter rolled. If the next child rolled the dice and it was a letter that they had a letter card for then they had to identify the letter sound and then each child found an item that started with that letter sound and placed it above the letter train card. The children continued the game until all the letter cards and items had been placed on their trains.

This game turned out to be a big hit all the children wanted to take turns playing the game with one another.

Paper Tube Airplanes

We made airplanes out of paper tubes and craft sticks.  The children painted and collaged their paper tubes and craft sticks and then assembled them into airplanes.

I used Lakeshore counting kids for the passengers.  I made the transportation mats with construction paper and laminated them for durability and also so that the children could use dry eraser markers.   

Transportation Pocket Chart

When teaching about math at circle time I find that it is helpful if I use a pocket chart so that the children can be more involved in the process. Children are able to come up and move the transportation cards around to change the sentence and then we all read the changed sentence together.

Number Chart

For the chart above I found foam stickers from the dollar store to make my chart, but you can use any kind of stickers. You can also make the chart based on the theme of study this upcoming week we will be working on transportation, but you could also do a chart with hearts.
