We will be starting off the month by talking about families since Thanksgiving is near and family is a big part of that.

 The month will end with many different activities centered around turkeys.

Turkey Spelling

Here is a fun way to get your students spelling and recognizing letters. Make picture cards with seasonal themed word. Have the children turn over the picture card and identify the picture and read the word under the picture. Next have the children spell out the word to one another. Once they have spelled it to one another have the children find the letters to that word and place the feathers in order around the turkey. Have the children check each others turkeys allowing them to help one another. Once they are done with that picture card, have them move onto the next one.

Note: Have enough feathers with letters for each child to spell out every word. Remember there are no winners or losers.

Turkey Rhyming Game

Make a set of rhyming word with pictures to match each word. For each rhyming set make a large picture card and a small picture card that can fit on a construction paper feather cut out. Glue the small rhyming picture card to a construction paper feather. Make a turkey shape body for each child. Have child turn over a picture card and have them identify the word. See if they can come up with any rhyming words to go with that picture card. Once they have come up with some of their own rhyming words see if they can find a feather with a picture on it that rhymes with the card that is turned over. Once they have found the feather have them place it around the body of their turkey. When all the feathers are gone game is over.

Note: Have enough feathers of each rhyming word for each child in the group.

Making Turkeys with Handprints

Making art with children’s hand prints is important to the parents; it gives them keepsakes of their child’s growth. When reflecting back it will help them recall when their child made it.

When using hand prints for you projects you can still make it where the children have control of their own project. You can do this by just providing them with the materials and letting them create what they want from those materials.

Here we gave the children materials that could be made into a turkey, but allowed them to create it how they wanted.

Every child in the classroom knew which one was theirs. 

Turkey Time

It is always fun to bring a holiday twist to finger play songs by just changing a few works to fit what you might be teaching about.  Here are a few songs that will go along with Thanksgiving and turkeys.

 Five Little Turkeys (song to the tune Five Little Ducks)



Five little turkeys went out to play
Over the fence and far away
Mother Turkey called gobble, gobble, gobble

Crafting for Teaching



I always enjoy making prop that will help enhance the children experience.




Here is what you will need:


Brown knitted glove from Target or Wal Mart (2 pairs for $1.50 right now)
Light Brown felt sheet
Dark Brown felt sheet
Orange Craft Foam sheet
Wiggle Eyes
Crafting Feather
Card Stock

First I cut out 5 circles about the size of a 50 cent piece out of the light brown felt



Next I cut out 5 circles about the size of a dime from the dark brown felt

I glued the tips of craft feather to the back side of the light brown felt and placed a card stock circle on top of the feather to bind them between the felt and card stock. This gave it a good stock body. Next I glued the dark brown felt circle to the top of the light brown felt circle and added the wiggle eyes and triangle shaped craft foam. Once I had all the turkeys made I attached Velcro to the backs of each turkey and the other half to the tips of the fingers on the glove.


Watch the children enjoy hearing the finger play song over and over again.

Turkey Time Transition Game

When it is time to transition children away from group time and into a different activity it is always good to have a transition game. This allows children to move more slowly to the next activity with less confusion.


Here is a turkey transition game for the holiday.

I made a large turkey with different color feathers.  This turkey will be placed on my flannel board in the circle area. 

Around the turkey body is different colored feathers with different action movements for the children to do.

As the children come up to play the game they roll a large cardboard box dice with color dots to match all of the feathers. A child comes up and rolls the dice identifies the color and then finds that color feather from the turkey. Once child finds the feather the teacher reads the movement that child needs to do before moving on to the next activity.



I have a class of 24 children so to make things run smoothly I have two to three dice going at the same time. I run the game and my assistant is making sure that the children are following the plan that they gave to us as to what they will be doing during say free choice time or making sure that they wash their hands for snack and find their seat.


I made the dice out of a 6 X6 mailing box.


Each feather has a Velcro sticker on it and the body of the turkey also has Velcro stickers on it.
