Dramatic Play Outdoors

Dramatic play areas are not just for indoor play time.  You can create areas outdoors for the children to enjoy dramatic play.

Find a large box from an appliance store and have the children paint it or you can even cover it with butcher paper.  Inside the large box create a scene, inside this box we created a window and placed x-ray pictures to represent a doctor’s office.  There’s a waiting area inside and office area set up inside the box.

There is also a box of props for the children to turn into doctors and nurses with.

Frog Pond Water Play

Cut out a supply of lily pads out of craft foam, add plastic frogs and small fish nets to the water tables or water tubs.

Jump Frog  Jump book with props

Find different items such as bean bag toys and small soft dolls to create a story tell kit for the children to retell the story on their own.

Color Frog Sorting Mats 

Make a supply of color mats for the children to sort all the different color frogs with.

Five Little Frogs Story Telling Glove 

Make a story telling glove out of craft foam and wiggle eyes.

A Life Size Very Hungary Caterpillar

The story of the Very Hungry Caterpillar has come to life in our out door play area.

The children through out the weeks have been enjoying finger paint, roller painting, splat painting and any other kind of painting that you can think of.  What they didn’t know was that we turned their art into a life size Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle.  We made the caterpillar body part out of a large appliance box.

The children have been using the hungry caterpillar as a play tunnel.  By creating this play area this story has come to life for them.

Caterpillar Color Bingo

Prepare a supply of caterpillar bingo mats by cutting out different color circles and forming a caterpillar out of them.  Make color cards using the same circle cut outs.  Have children flip the color cards over and identify the color.  Once the color has been identified have the children find and place a matching color pom poms on that color circle.  Once the caterpillar has all its pom poms game is over.  If your children need to work on fine motor skills have them pick up the pom poms with tweezers or tongs.
