Open Ended Questions

Open ended questions are one of the most import teaching tools to have in the teacher’s tool box.  Open ended questions are a way to offer children the opportunity to freely express their knowledge, ideas and feelings.  They are also a way to get children to use and expand their vocabulary.

Open ended questions are those questions that have no single right or wrong answer.  How ever these questions sometime are a challenge to remember to ask while you are freely working with children, it is a habit that we have to form as a teacher.  To help with this process I have created posters that I have placed around my classroom in the learning center.  These posters are help for not only me but those that work with me.  (Teacher assistance, parent helper and subs)

Here is a free poster of General Open Ended Questions that you can use.

To get the whole set go to Teachers Pay Teachers or Teachers Notebook

Grouchy Ladybug

The children have been enjoying the Grouchy Ladybug story so with all of their excitement with the book we had to make our own grouchy ladybugs.

Here is a creative writing sheet that we will be using this week.

Children will mark the clock to a time by drawing arrows on the clock and then they will draw a picture of the grouchy ladybug and what it came to.  Children can draw a picture of any animal it does not have to be one from the book.

You can download the art project template and creative write sheet below.

Mud Kitchen Open for Business

The mud kitchen is official open for business.
Here it sits waiting for the daily rush of customers.  In the area we have an old outdoor sink that has been converted into a water table.  Two work tables and under each work table is milk crates filled with items that we collected from thrift stores and garage sales.

You will find the majority of the children around the mud kitchen when we are using the outdoor classroom.

These dishes have been the best find and you will not believe where we found them and what one of our teachers said.

We were cleaning out a shed that had old kitchen supplies in it and found boxes of these dishes.  Once I brought them out for our mud kitchen one of the ladies that teaches with me said “Hey those are the dishes I used to eat off of as child here when we had our own kitchen staff.”  She went to school here in the mid 70’s.  You never know what you will find when you clean things out around here.

 Love the Mud Kitchen!

Mother’s Day Gift

Mother’s Day is getting near and near and the children have been working very hard on their mother’s day gifts.  This year’s project had a lot of steps but the end result has turned out wonderful as you all can see.  The children are so excited to give their moms their special bouquet made with lots of love by their little ones.

Each child collected small sticks from the play yard and painted them (used for the flower stems).  Next the children painted egg carton flowers in bright colors and sprinkled them with glitter.  Another day they did blotto painted butterflies.

To finish off their project they created a special drawing with a saying onto a sticker that they placed on the flower box.  Once every thing was done the children placed a ball of play dough into their box and stuck the flower stems (sticks) into it.  Butterflies were attached with glitter pipe cleaners and stuck into the play dough as well.

Now that I am done with Mother’s day I can’t stop thinking about what are we going to do for Father’s day.
